We’re getting off to an exciting start to the Sunday School year! On Rally Day, September 11, kids parents, teachers will gather in the sanctuary at 9:30 a.m. for the first 15-20 minutes of worship. We will celebrate that our Sunday School is ready to buy an ark for Heifer International.
Kids and teachers will be blessed, and sent off to classrooms to begin a new Sunday School year ad-venture. Adult classes Contemporary Issues and Heart of Faith will begin at 9:30.
The play’s the thing! And on June 26 it’s called “Peter the Impetuous.”
This summer, back by popular demand, children ages Pre-K through 3rd grade will be able to enjoy Bible story plays put on by our older students. The younger children will begin Sunday mornings in worship and after the children’s time will be dismissed to enjoy a performance by our older students. If you are in 4th grade and up and are interested in acting in these plays, come to Room 204/205 at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings before the 10 AM worship service.

On July 3, hear and see “The Further Adventures of David.” On July 10, families will attend the ASP service. Next up — “The 40th Lash” on July 17 and “Adam and Eve” on July 24.
Children in Pre-K through 3rd grade — and older children who aren’t thespians that day — are invited to go to Room 204 after the Children’s Sermon to watch the play and have refreshments, apple juice and vanilla wafers. (Parents please pick up your young child after church. Fourth graders and up may join you in the Sanford Davis Room for coffee hour.)

Two adult classes are offered on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. Both welcome ‘drop ins’ at any time.
The Heart of our Faith class is studying the book of James. says Don Brash, Theologian in Residence at PUMC. New this year — Don will be joined by Bill Arnold as co-leader of the class, known for its lively discussions from divergent points of view.
Meeting
in the library, the Contemporary Issues class is reading a book of essays, The Givenness of Things, by Marilynne Robinson, who won the Pulitzer for her novel Gilead. According to the publisher, the book “investigates how the work of the great thinkers of the past, Calvin, Locke, Bonhoeffer–and Shakespeare–can infuse our lives, and calls attention to the rise of the self-declared elite in American religious and political life.” For the New York Times review, click here.
Other study groups that welcome drop ins: The United Methodist Men on Tuesday nights, the Monday Morning Group on Monday mornings.

Here is a link to photos from last year’s Advent Night, posted on Facebook. This year’s pageant is entitled “Joy to the World” and is directed by Kaleigh Corbett and Tom Shelton. The pageant is at 4, dinner and crafts at 5:15, and a carol sing-along with dessert at 6:30. All are welcome!
Be sure to join us for our annual Advent Night celebration on Sunday, December 6th from 4 to 7 p.m. It will be a joy filled evening as we begin our preparation
for the arrival of the Christ Child. We will begin with our Christmas Pageant at 4:00 PM, titled Joy to the World, where we will hear and see the Christmas Story as told by our Sunday School and Children’s Choir. Tom Shelton has been hard at work rehearsing with our elementary school choirs and Sunday School children. It will be a wonderful way to kick off the Advent Season.
Following the pageant, join us for a time of dinner and crafts. From 5:15 – 6:25 there will be 5 craft stations set up for crafters of all ages. Kids, make a secret craft for your parents with help from our confirmation class. Everyone is welcome to decorate a gingerbread
cookie as well! Need a break from crafting? Come on downstairs to the Fellowship Hall for a good old fashioned potluck dinner. Don’t forget to bring something to share!
Be sure you are finished with your craft by 6:30 because we will conclude the evening with carol singing and dessert led by Karen Zumbrunn. Bring your favorite dessert to share.

The school supplies will be used for the VBS mission project. There are children in our community who will struggle to come to school with everything they need to be part of the fun! Try to bring the supplies to the office — or in the bin by the nursery — before Wednesday morning, but they will be welcome any time.

If we look through the Vacation Bible School albums from years past, we see pictures of children who were in VBS just a short time ago — it seems like seconds — and now they are working in mission on the Appalachia Service Project. The fun and learning that happened in church, at Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, has helped kids grow up to be Christian adults.
Vacation Bible School this year is three evenings, August 11 to 13, 5;30 to 8 p.m. Children will learn about God’s people (like Sarah and Abraham) and the parables of Jesus (the Good Samaritan). They will learn why it’s important to love your neighbor, and do hands-on mission projects to help others.
Making Christian education happen is so important. Invite your neighbor’s children!
VBS is also a chance to be in community. All adults, not just parents, are invited to join VBS for the family meal at 5:30 or for the closing worship at 7:45.

Helping our children to have a “sense of mission,” to learn how to help others, is our focus this summer. After Children’s Time, preschoolers through rising 6th grade can choose whether to stay in worship or go to Caring Kids. Each week has a different focus — a Bible story and an activity. Last week in the Caring Kids program, the children made paper hand “hugs” for teens going away to college, based on I Corinthians 16:20:

This week, August 2, children will make “Get Well Soon” gift bags for people Pastor Catherine visits while they are sick. In weeks to come, they will make “Welcome” signs for children whose families have just moved to Princeton so their parents can attend seminary and, on another Sunday, placemats for Cornerstone Community Kitchen.
Love children and youth? Want to make a difference in a child’s life? Want to help our children and youth explore the love of God? Then teaching Sunday School might just be for you! The Education Committee is looking for a few more Sunday School teachers for the 2015-16 year. No teaching experience necessary – we will provide you with the curriculum and help you with resources. Can’t commit to every week? That’s ok too! Many of our teachers rotate and work together to create a calendar that works for them. We have openings for all ages (elementary, middle, and high school).
